Nandini Nair and Soubhik H are the humans behind Hungry Eyes; both of whom have worked in the hospitality industry since 2000. Soubhik has a food & beverage background with various hotels, QSR brands during his stint at the Bangalore Airport and at a customer success team within a retail platform provider.
Nandini has a corporate sales background with hotels, consulting, media agencies and raising CSR funds during her stint with an NGO. One key principle they have taken away from their professional journey has always been the importance of customer experience and they are working towards ensuring that remains a priority for Hungry Eyes.
Inspiration behind Hungry Eyes
Speaking to Petrons, Nandini shared their beautiful journey. Nandini and Soubhik always wanted to build something they could call their own, using their experience, network and interests. They both love dogs, and they both enjoy food. The idea of starting a fresh dog food business came about after they got Beauty, their dog, home. Food and customer service is an industry that has always been close to Soubhik and Nandini and a part of their lives. For them, watching Beauty bond with them and food being a big part of this journey, resulted in them starting Hungry Eyes. So long story cut short, their inspiration is Beauty.
What sets Hungry Eyes apart from other dog food brands?
Hungry Eyes offers chunky, meaty fresh dog food. They have taken efforts to ensure, all ingredients are visible to the dog handler and provide a good bite for the dog. They cut their meats, vegetables, and treats into bite-sized cubes.
At Hungry Eyes, they vacuum pack fresh dog meals to increase the shelf life of the meals for 10 days under refrigeration. They introduced vacuum-packaged dog food based on feedback they received from their customers. Like taking less storage space in the refrigerator and reducing the number of deliveries from 6-7 deliveries a month to only 3 a month. “Our dog meals, with & without grain, are priced the same. This is possible for us because we keep our grain portion to only 5% of the meal, in a meal with grain. For the grainless option, we replace this 5% grain with vegetables.” Nandini added.
Core values of brand Hungry Eyes
In the dog food industry, the founders do realise that trust and consistency are crucial for providing the best possible nutrition for your furry friend. That’s why they prioritise these values in every aspect of their business, from sourcing the freshest ingredients to creating balanced and delicious recipes.
The nutrition offered by Hungry Eyes
Fresh dog food from Hungry Eyes is as nutritious as home-cooked meals! They prepare fresh dog food with dog-safe ingredients; across all breeds, ages and stages of a pup’s life. They offer a range of meat options in their dog meals, dog treats & bone broth for dogs. From their procurement of raw materials to cleaning, storing, preparing, packaging and delivery, they follow food safety standards with care and commitment.
Their dog meal portion is 78% animal protein, 17% vegetables & 5% grain.
Their dog treats are single-ingredient & gluten-free – liver, gizzard & chicken feet and bone broth ingredients are just bones.
She says that at Hungry Eyes, they strongly believe “if it’s fresh food one wants to serve their dog and it needs to be healthy for your dog, it should be safe for the human to try as well”. Their guidelines or recommendations on feed quantity are simple; 3% of the dog’s weight for an active pooch. They provide all information on activity and feed guidelines on their official website.
What makes their products click?
Give Hungry Eyes a try and decide for yourself and your dog is what the team recommends. They offer not only single-meal options, but they also have a pack of three, five and ten. They currently have single meat options on their menu, specially crafted to ensure you’ve offered all meat options to your dog to ensure your pup is not allergic to any protein. Their meats, vegetables and grains are prepared individually and portioned before packing the fresh dog meals. This helps them maintain chunky meals for your dog and a visual appeal for you.
Learnings that came in handy
Nandini recounts some experiences of theirs with their dog. She admits to have made mistakes in the past when it comes to dog food quantities, especially for home-cooked meals. With one of their dogs, they, unfortunately, were underfeeding him and luckily were corrected by their behaviourist. “After increasing the feed quantity, it was wonderful to see the transformation in our puppy” she added.
They did consult veterinary professionals as well on their pup being underweight and still the issue continued to remain unattended. This experience made them realise the lack of information available online on fresh/home-cooked dog food quantities. And even if there is information, the measures were in cups, calories etc.
That’s why they were clear that basic information pertaining to quantity of fresh dog food based on activity and age guidelines, amongst others were something they wanted to be an integral part of their website.
This information available on their website was well researched and matched back to the inputs received from canine professionals who look after 100’s of dogs a day. And they have always made it a point to learn from experienced dog parents on matters like ideal feed for weight reduction, which protein is the best for skin issues to name a few.
The biggest challenge for the founders
Popular fresh dog food brands offer customised meals. They want to keep their products accessible to their customers and customised products tend to be a costly affair for both the business as well as the customers. Fortunately, they have received great feedback and requests from their customers which they have been able to offer as a standardised product offering. They are working on a few more meal options to fit the convenience of their customers and still keep their dogs healthy and happy.
Long term objective for brand Hungry Eyes
“Being able to gain the trust of dog parents who have decided to make us a part of their pet’s life is the most rewarding part of the journey,” admits Nandini. Hence, at this stage of their business, their focus is on gaining trust from more customers and making Hungry Eyes sustainable for everybody involved – customers, themselves and partners. They are constantly working towards establishing Hungry Eyes as a reliable and constant source of nourishment for dogs.
